Then He said to (doubting) Thomas, "Put your finger here; see My Hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My Side. Stop doubting and believe." ~ John 20:27

All discussion of why we suffer seems too callously academic. Pain affects us on the most basic human level, so much so, that the only thing that our soul screams is outrage and protest. This is what happens when we lash out at God or at other people when we suffer with seeming lack of cause-effect evidence.
Satan knows this. He gets perverse pleasure when he can deliver the "double whammy": get people to suffer and, at the same time, get them to lash out at God and at others. It's like a pyromaniac sparking the flame in a forest, then running, cackling maniacally.
The un-fairy-tale hard fact is that we live in a fallen, sin-infected world, where the effects have gained momentum over the decades. Sometimes the innocent get hit by the tidal-wave effects of generations of sin, and this insults our insistence that life should be fair.
Jesus Christ did the most wonderful UNFAIR thing in history: He, Who was only one who had never sinned, suffered and died for the sin of all the guilty (2 Corinthians 5:21). What is fair about that? It is love that goes infinitely beyond the questions of fair-unfair, as to be supernaturally powerful. The nail scars remain, to remind us for eternity, that the only reason any soul is in Heaven is that each one has God's Great Unfair Salvation. It's all about Jesus, and it's all about grace. His glory in our souls is but a deposit, guaranteeing the greater glory to come (Ephesians 1:13-14).
