I heard a quote a while back and thought it to be profound. He said, “
He must be everything to you or He is nothing to you."
I got to thinking about my own life. I love God with all my heart and I know He loves me with all of His. I have always wanted to do something for God to further His kingdom. Therefore, when He gave me a writing mandate, I was elated.
I wanted to do the best I could for Him and so I dove into that job with everything I had, but the…

PART 7 OF 8
Seeking God Through Daily Prayer
In chapter four I shared with you an encounter I had in my front room with the Lord while praying. I was recently divorced and felt that God knew that I needed some validation, comfort, and love. However, I believe that there was a second reason why He allowed the experience.
I had committed to pray with Him for one hour each morning.
At the time, I'd forgotten about what Jesus said to His disciples in the Garden o…

SEEKING GOD’S WILL: Hearing God
When I first sat down to write Seeking God’s Will, before I had even committed one word to paper, God gave me a vision. I was on this side of a large gully and a man was standing on the other side. I could faintly hear his mumbling echo, but I couldn’t understand a word he was saying.
I thought,
Lord, what is this? What does this mean? I heard in my spirit, “If you w…

SEEKING GOD: Calling out to God
The footsteps behind him were unrelenting and he was running as fast as he could. His lungs felt like they would explode at any moment, yet the swish of footsteps in the grass that followed him, didn’t lose a beat. In fact, they seemed to be closing the gap. Mere exhaustion would soon force him to stop and face his stalker no matter what the outcome. His heart raced and thre…

SEEKING GOD’S PURPOSE: Treasure Hunters
The sky was a little overcast as he walked down the road, a road that was more like a small path winding itself through the countryside. At least he had a heavy tunic that shielded him from the evening air. As long as he made it to Jericho before the Sabbath [1], he’d be alright, for this wasn’t the safest stretch of road in the land.
From out of nowhere, three men…

Praise God in all things [1].
Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. . .Yes, even when we’re sick and down, give praise unto Jesus.
Being physically sick is a good thing because temperature is the body’s way of fighting off the invaders of our body. Thank you Jesus because you have fearfully and wonderfully made us [2]. Our bodies work exactly like you have p…

SEEKING GOD’S HEART: The Courtship of God
The evening was a typically beautiful and peaceful night. A small breeze was blowing and seemed to be following a previous gust that had already passed through. David sat leaning against a tree trunk playing his harp and singing psalms to God and to his father’s sleeping sheep. His eyelids were getting a little heavy in the tranquility of the moment and he could probably drift off himself if not for the fact that the sheep were…

SEEKING GOD'S FACE: The Characteristics of God
My divorce was an extremely hard time in my life and if I ever needed God, it was then. At that time I was living in a one-bedroom apartment and I’d just made a new commitment to pray with God for one hour each day. Therefore, at 4:00 AM, I crawled out of bed, got dressed, and went to the front room to fellowship with the Lord.
I was praying the Lord’s Prayer and had just hallowed His name. I stood there waiting on His re…

SEEKING GOD'S HANDS:God's Provision
Not long ago, I went to the beach for some much-needed R&R. I checked into the Proposal Rock Inn at Neskowin, Oregon, unpacked, and immediately headed for the wet hard sand.
I stood there in awe and overlooked the ocean as the tide slowly but surely encroached on the land, devouring it inch by inch only to recede leaving the shoreline looking as though there was never an invasion of water.
For centuries, the sea has drawn many…

I was divorced and living in a one-bedroom apartment, feeling confused and alone. It was a hard time in my life but I had always loved the Lord and been very close to Him. I needed Him now more than ever.
On this particular morning the alarm had just zapped me with its wake-up call so I needed to get up and ready for work. I didn’t normally get up at 4:00AM but I had recently made a new commitment to pray with God for one hour each day. I crawled out of bed, got dressed, and went to the front r…

Nineteen years ago, the wife and I sat in a pastor’s office enumerating our woes as wounded partners in an injured marriage of twenty-three years. As we poured out our hearts to him, he patiently sat there listening to every word. I told him that I loved my wife but I was beginning to doubt her love for me and that we were beginning to drift apart.
After I’d finished, he reached into his back pocket and retrieved his wallet. He opened it up, thumbed through a couple denominations, and finally w…

A while back, I watched a 1998 movie,
Deep Impact, with Robert Duvall and Tea Leoni. The movie was about an asteroid, the size of New York that was heading for Earth in true “Armageddon style.”
To save the Earth, America decided to send up a spaceship to destroy the monstrous asteroid. . .but they failed. They did, however, succeed in busting up the asteroid into two pieces: one smaller piece, and another larger piece, but both of them were still heading for Earth.
With the Earth's dest…

The birth of my first great grandchild reminded me of how scary newborn infants can be. I’d forgotten how fragile they actually are. How can something be so soft, cuddly, and delicate and at the same time, be so scary?
Because of an infant’s fragility, they are totally dependent on their parents. The only thing they know how to do is. . .drink milk, pooh, and sleep. However, they eventually learn to sit-up, stand, talk, walk, run, and get into things.
Then something happens. They develop intel…

Recently, I settled back into my recliner, TV dinner, and milk in hand to watch a movie on the tube. The blurb was innocent enough so I clicked on the appropriate channel, squirming to get comfortable and to dive into my dinner.
The title I’d chosen was
The Skeleton Key starring Kate Hudson, Gena Rowland, Peter Starsgaard, and John Hurt. The storyline was about a young woman who, disenfranchised by a common apathy toward patients at a hospice ward, leaves to take a position as a caretake…

When I was a child, I was deathly afraid of spiders. How could I be so scared of such a small thing that I could crush with one well-placed step? I do not base my fear on any ordinary spider though -- but rather, a tarantula. My fear, in part, was due to the 1955 movie
Tarantula where a tarantula grew to the size of a building and terrorized a city until they put it to death.
That fear of spiders hung with me for many years after that and as I think back to those days, it reminds me of a…

For nine-months I’d waited for this moment. I was going to be a great grandpa. My granddaughter Shelsea, was in the delivery room waiting for little Matthew to decide when he was going to grace everybody with his appearance. Her boyfriend, grandma and her fiancé were there also. What an exciting time. Only God knew when little Matthew would be born, so we all settled down for the job at hand -- waiting.
Finally, at eight o’clock, it was time for Matthew to make his world debut. The doctor broke…

It was a quiet Saturday afternoon and neither my wife nor I were very ambitious. We were both enjoying a much-needed day off. I was very warm and comfortable sitting in my recliner. My wife sat on the couch directly across from me trying to read a letter she had just received before nodding off. Spirits of love, peace, and contentment hovered in our home.
As I watched, her eyes would periodically close and she would slowly, but surely, open them again, and again trying disparately to focus on t…

When I was a young man, my sister and I were walking home from a dance. We frequented this weekly event every Saturday night because sis loved to dance. At the time, I had just turned sixteen and Judy was only thirteen and in the eighth grade. She was very mature and beautiful for her age. We were (and still are) the best of friends.
Suddenly, from the shadows, a young man in uniform materialized, which startled us. Judging solely by his looks, I figured him to be about nineteen or twenty. His…

Like most Sunday mornings you can find me in church waiting to hear from God and spending some quality time worshiping Him. God’s house is a refuge for me from all of the problems that face the world today.
I attend a prophetic and worshiping church, so the service format is a little different from most conventional churches. My pastor first gives the message and then we worship God for another hour and a half or longer.
This morning was no different. After the message and a couple songs, they…

Have you ever heard someone say, “I know God is in my heart, I just don’t feel His presence?” Many people today have these same thoughts. They not only have worries of government and world crisis but trouble with personal problems and setbacks as well. Worry and fear are the opposite of faith and any number of unrepentant sins can make us wander away from God.
It's all about relationship. . .relationship with God. Personal problems are the hardest because they hit closest to home. There was a t…
