Hi There,

It is so important to discuss our interpretations of a topic to ensure clarity. Also, sometimes language culture can cause misunderstandings. May God Bless you richly in your journey with Him and other believers.

Hi Carla,
I believe that Paul clearly tells us in Romans 4: 4-5, what little help our "Works" are towards our Salvation. In fact we are beyond working for our Salvation at any time.

"Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is
counted for righteousness." (Rom 4:4-5)

Please allow me to break this up into portions.

"Now to him that worketh, is the reward not reckoned of Grace but of debt." verse 4

Should I do some work for you Carla and you came to me afterwards and said "Here, Ron is a gift for you in payment for what you have done." It is not a Gift from you, it is a debt you owe me, in fact I EARNED it.

"But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." verse 5

What scripture is telling us here in verse 5 is, that the man that does absolutely no work for his salvation but believes that God is able to save him.
God will reward this man's belief because of the faith he has in God. Note the promises God gives. He will reward "Justify" the UNGODLY. (Not the godly BUT THE UNGODLY, because there is none righteous no not one) Furtheremore. this man's faith, God counts as RIGHTEOUSNESS.

So we the "UNGODLY, have first been justified because of our belief and faith in God and furthermore because of this faith alone, God counts us as RIGHTEOUS. Therefore the Just are saved by Grace and NOT works.
If we insisted that we need to do something towards our salvation, then we would be slapping God through the face and literally saying "I can do a better job and patch up my faults myself. To be saved (Bad News... whoever thinks that)
We see then how important it is that we believe that God ONLY justifies the UNGODLY and not the Godly,
Furthermore it is through their FAITH ALONE AND CERTAINLY NOT WORKS AT ANY TIME.

But is there anything we can do by works?
Ofcourse there is but not works to hopefully attain righteousnes or salvation. We are sinners saved by grace who continually fall into sin.
Naturally Our faith in Him is shown and proved by our prayers of repentance, where we turn to Him and not our works.
IT IS ALL ABOUT FAITH IN WHAT GOD HAS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH JESUS CHRIST.

I think this is what you were correctly, saying to the others

Also Greg put it in a NUtshell when he quoted a portion of Pauls letter to Titus.

"But when the kindness and love of God our Savior was revealed, he saved us. It was not because of any good deeds that we ourselves had done, but because of his own mercy that he saved us, through the Holy Spirit, who gives us new birth and new life by washing us.
God poured out the Holy Spirit abundantly on us through Jesus Christ our Savior." (Titus 3:4-6)

To those that do not believe in the reality and eternality of hell...

Jesus talked more about the reality of hell in the Bible than heaven. One cannot just pick and choose certain verses out of the Bible and twist them into something that makes people feel good. The clear teaching of the Bible is that Hell is forever.

The punishment of the wicked in hell is as never-ending as the bliss of the righteous in Heaven. The punishment of the wicked dead in hell is described throughout Scripture as "everlasting fire" (Matthew 25:41), "unquenchable fire" (Matthew 3:12), "shame and everlasting contempt" (Daniel 12:2), a place where "their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched" (Mark 9:44-49), a place of "torments" and "flame" (Luke 16:23,24), "everlasting destruction" (2 Thessalonians 1:9), a place of torment with "fire and brimstone" where "the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever" (Revelation 14:10,11), and a "lake of fire and brimstone" where the wicked are "tormented day and night forever and ever" (Revelation 20:10). Jesus Himself indicates that the punishment in hell itself is everlasting - not merely the smoke and flames (Matthew 25:46).

Sin steals the innocence from one's mind.. Adam & Eve in the garden were as innocent as babes and as pure as honey in the comb..until.. the theif stole their innocence as the wind steals the smoke (Genesis 3)Their unparalleled purity became as irreplaceable as a broken egg. Their guilt drove them from their God and their God drove them from their paradise. The age of innovence was finished.
Sin steals the comfort from one's pillow. Jacob pillowed his head on a stone.(Gen,28:18) Sin steals the self-confidence from one's eye. The eye tells much about what a man thinks of himself. Jesus said, "The light of the body is the eye..."(Matt,6:22) Where once was a Christian confident in his power to wage war with Satan now stands a sinner feeling like a prisoner of war. Sin Steals the Influence from One's Life. The Christian worker who once owned the respect of his peers now feels like a hypocrite among associates( Rom 2:21,24) And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed. He went home to his city and put his household in order and hanged himself.
(2 Samuel 17:33) The Christian's light must never loose its sparkle; her salt must never loose its flavor.(Matt 5:14,16) He must use sound speech that cannot be condemened; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say. (Titus 2:8) Get rid of your sins! God's wonderful grace has a plan for non-christians (Faith John 3:16 Repentance. Luke 13:3 Confession of Christ Matt.10:32 Baptisim Acts 2:38) and Christian (repentance ,confession, prayer, Acts 8:22 James 5:26) Get Rid of Your Guilt! Once God has forgotten your sins, you do yourself a favor, forget them as well!,. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater then our heart and knoweth all things. Bloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. (1 John 3:20,21). This will restore the innocence to your soul. the comfort to your pillow. the confidence to your eye, and the influence to your life. May God bless... ray

No, we are all sinners saved by grace. All we need to do is walk as close to Jesus as we can after deciding to make him first in our life.
