I want to know why do people use God’s name in when they do not talk about him. When something is wonderful etc. they would say ‘oh my …..” . I know that it’s wrong, but how should I go about it when people aroung me uses God name that way.
Some of my varsity friends say it…and I must say that I feel guilty for not doing anything about that…I just don’t know what or how to say to them that they should stop from saying that.
Hi Lea....Yes I know. I feel the same way. I feel I do not stand up for God when I bite my tongue and be quiet. Lately, I got to tell you though, I can feel God building me up for his glory. I have been much more bold about asking people "please don't take God's name in vain, it offends me and I know it offends God."
God Bless Your being sensitive to the Holy Spirit......Vonda
In my own life it was a first sign of my conversion, that I stopped using inappropriate language and stopped using the name of the Lord with common slang uses that displease God. I have used kind of different approach with others. I have responded with something like, when someone uses the name Jesus Christ, I would say; oh I know him.
You know it is the enemy that inspires the lost to make common, or use the name in an unholy manor. I haven't had too many people who knew me for any amount of time would use this kind of language in my presence, basically because I have always been vocal about my faith. It is amazing to me that the enemy even candy coats it by inspiring people to say Jesum or Gosh darn it, etc, which are the same thing. It is all an attempt to minimize the name where by men can be saved.
Eliminating the use of that slang was also the first sign of my conversion. IT instantly became offensive to me.
Bob, I really like what you said, I will try that also.
My husband uses the slang all the time..and around my kids. My kids have started to correct him my youngest Joshua has said to him "You're only supposed to use God's name when you are praying to Him."--out of the mouths of babes!
Even unbelievers act appropriate in a church building or court room or around important people. And when they are around us as temples of the Holy Spirit and they know who we are , most of the time they will honor you and not do it. I remember when I was in the 8th grade and I had a elderly Godly teacher and one day in her class I used the name of the Lord in vain and she heard me and turned and looked me in the eye and as she would do, she told me to shut my mouth and the look in her eye put the fear of God in me even though I was not saved yet. I never forgot it. It was disrespectful to her and her God. You never hear people saying the name of Budda in vain or mohomad in Vain.
thanks Carol and Bob B for your latest comment...Bob what you said what the teacher have done wow she must have been a remarkable teacher!
Carol i will try to tell my friends...i've messed up the last week the oppertunity to say/do anything about it, but hopefully i wont do the next time...
hello hope all is well with yoiu. please remember that their eyes and mind have been darkened by the sins of this world...you cant tell them they shouldnt say it, but what you should do show them the commandments. and how they not only broke GODs law. but how their sin has seperated them from a HOLY GOD........you need to poiint out that they will be judged by what they do and say. also point out that if they break of the 10 its like breaking all of them........this is your oportunity to be a witness to your friends..........GOD bless

Rox,
If they are not your friends after you tell them the truth, they never were in the first place!
I know when I hear someone uses the Lord name in Vain around me it makes me cringe. I do a silent prayer for that person. But, I still have to use the Lord to tell them that it is offensive and they broke God's law. I still myself have a difficult time saying something, but I feel the Lord helpin me. My fiance says it, it drives me crazy!
Carla,
I feel you sister. My kids say the same thing to their father, "dont say that!"
